Reply:probably 2 or 3 decades ago, cavities in the tooth used to be filled with silver amalgam. reason being, it was as strong if not stronger than tooth itself, thus less chances of it crumbling during forces applied while chewing and grinding. the silver at times used to get tarnished partially.


metal crowns looked silvery, and people thought of it as a status symbol to get golden colored crowns. apart from cosmetic value, there is no distinct advantage of the golden crown.


these days with all the composite fillings, ceramic crowns etc, one cannot make out which is the real tooth and which isn%26#039;t. a perfect color match is obtained, tailor made for the patient.
